* Nine Inch Nails, connu aussi sous le sigle NIИ, est un groupe de métal industriel américain crée en 1988 par Trent Reznor. L'une des particularités du groupe est d'avoir entrepris avec succès l'assemblage de nombreuses influences musicales (synth pop, metal, electronica...) pour en ressortir un son unique ayant eu une grande influence sur de nombreux groupe qui émergeront durant les années 90 (Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Stabbing Westward...). Nine Inch Nails est aussi célèbre pour avoir popularisé la musique industrielle qui était réservé jusque-là, à une frange extrêmement restreinte de connaisseurs.

 * "Je ne sais pas si vous avez déjà essayé de réfléchir à un nom de groupe, mais généralement tu penses en avoir un génial et tu le regardes le jour suivant et c'est stupide. J'en avais environ 200. Nine Inch Nails a tenu le test des deux semaines, ça avait l'air génial graphiquement et l'abréviation était facile. Ca n'a vraiment aucun sens littéral. Ca semble être effrayant. Dur et viril ! C'est une malédiction d'essayer de proposer des noms de groupe."

 * Nine Inch Nails, veut dire littéralement clou ou ongle de 9 pouces (soit environ 22 cm.) Il pourrait s'agir d'une référence aux clous qui ont servi à crucifier le Christ ; ces clous sont également utilisés pour fermer les sarcophages. Il pourrait également s'agir d'un rappel de la longueur des ongles du tueur Freddy Krueger dans la série éponyme.
